Art vs Craft

Art
Follow the dream and then people will follow you

  • Express through music videos
  • If clients say yes to getting the video made they can't say no to any ideas he has for it
  • Done for free
For Commercial work he follows the client

Craft
Using your own inspiration and style for a serious client

A little bit of both

MGMT: Music Video
  • Told to do his own thing but make it awesome
  • Including lyrics without knowing lyric videos was a thing
  • From there asked  to make lyric videos
Nickelodeon
  • Asked if wanted to pitch to them
  • Back to art (Free/for yourself)
  • Craft. Turning back to something you can sell
A little bit of both (Again)
  • Free is not always bad because you don't lose anything but instead gets you noticed
  • By doing stuff for free it brings the market down
  • Why pay for something when I can get it for free from someone else
  • Expecting all of the rest to be free
A little bit of neither
  • Not for self but not for money (company and free)
  • Has to be on your own terms
"If your freedom work is successful, do it for money!"
"Do things you want to do for free, don't do work where the client has control for free. Even for exposure."

He uses After Effects and Flash
Sometimes he storyboards and plans it all out, sometimes he just jumps in and gets stuck in before he really knows where it's going.

School does not express creative thinking. Getting to the ONE right answer as quickly as possible

Caroline Broadhead (1998) - Ideas in the making crafts council, London

Divergent Thinking

A -----> B

     ---->   >----
A  ---->   >---- B
     ---->   >----
A=Divergent thinking
B=Convergent thinking

Diamond thinking ---> Double Diamonds ---> Multiple Diamond Thinking

Trust
  • Trust you will come up with the goods under pressure
  • How do I keep it?
    • More aware of design process
    • Work out where you get stuck
Good to learn to trust yourself before trusting group members
  • If you can do it by yourself you can do it in a group
Self awareness
  • Being aware of where/when you get stuck
  • Being aware of what the pattern is so you know how and when the problems arise
"I've done this 100 times, I can do it again."

  • Suspend Judgement
  • Openness
  • Play
  • Risk Taking
  • New
Concept Blending
  • Apple - Steve Jobs
    • Computer stand & sunflower: Swivel Head
  • Uni Student
    • Packaging Design & Buildings: See the building as boxes
De Bono believes creativity is being able to shift your thinking through many different styles
  • 6 Thinking Hats, Edward De Bono

Suspend judgement
  • Create times in brainstorming whee no critique is allowed (at first)
  • If things get too tense - STOP - walk away - take time out
Openness
  • Listening - are you open enough to do this?
  • Empathy for others... not just client/user
Play
  • Play often involves movement > good for synthesis
  • Play can diffuse tensions
Risk taking
  • People are able to do this more or less at different times
  • Support each other, remind each other are you practicing

Critique Anonymously
  • Sticky Dots, Post it Notes
  • Same Pen
  • Google Doc
