Wellington City Library Tour

We were kindly given a 1 1/2 hour tour around the library and they also included some exclusive behind the scenes sneak peaks.


  • They have library baskets to hold all your bags! 
  • Their busiest return day is after the Easter holidays. 
  • Carpet and shelves were specially made for the library.
  • The carpet being an a representation of Taniwha.
  • The wheeled shelves near the entrance are moved when events are held. 
  • The offices between the escalators on the ground floor are for hire. $10 an hour.
  • Red shelves offer best sellers. Colour coded.
  • Library Elf is an international service and would actually be really useful if more people used it. 
  • Fiction is alphabetical (apart from mystery, scifi etc being separated?), Non fiction is dewy decimal (apart from biographies).
  • DVDs are half price with community services card. ($4 reg $2 pink dot $8 box set)
  • Free internet access is restricted to NZ websites. 
  • Paid internet is $1.50 for 15 minutes.
  • Printing and Scanning is available (although more expensive than unis)
  • We're getting the statistics for their blog and website in the coming week or so.
  • They're not allowed to make profit from their charges, can't increase them.
  • Internet is on first and second floor mainly.
  • Free music room is available at a first come, first served basis unless you book. 30 mins. 
  • Zine collection is on the second floor, can add your own zines to it! 
  • Press displays advertise less popular books. 
  • Book sales twice a year with the older books. 
  • They buy in books from publics suggestions if it suits the library needs.
