The most recognisable novels I would think are the 'Puffin Classic' range (not all Puffin Classics are fiction but a large amount of them are). The dossier here is A5, giving it more of a novel feel, with perfect binding, and french fold pages (to increase the thickness so it would have a spine and feel more 'novel like'). I would like to push the novel approach further by changing the page size from regular A5 to A5 height but narrower, this would be closer to novel sized i.e. 13x21cm.
Unfortunately as Sophie has pointed out our presentation features black and blue so the orange may be too removed from this; it does however reinforce the 'fiction' side of our proposal more with orange so it will be a toss up of reinforcing the presentation vs. reinforcing our fiction focus. Perhaps the Penguin design is so well recognised that it may still be recognised if we keep the other cover elements such as the ratio of the three sections, title in bold Gill Sans and author in regular Gill Sans, shape (usually with Penguin books in it), and centred layout.
