Entered double front sliding door, confused because of a stairway to the side because their is no sign saying library cafe, but I see the library book security scanners ahead so I assume that way is the actual library
After going through 3 different doorways we were confronted with stairs/escalators and fiction books to the left and right. So not quite enough space around the entrance to really gain your bearings in the space without going to the left or right because libraries have a lot of things going on inside them. In saying that this one was quite cluttered:
The sections of the space doesn't follow the structural pillar foundations of the building into an easy to read grid, instead the shelves are moved into complex positions that a new user could find chaotic along with the pillars becoming an obstacle in space flow.
Visually cluttered with heaps of lights, some of different kinds with not much apparent order. Shelving isn't that clean of a design which could be easier to read. Carpet has a weird mix of colours that don't gel with me personally, but it would be much cleaner if just one simple colour, unless it turned into a means of way finding or something.
The audible ambiance was also predominantly made up of escalator/elevator/other machine sounds and human voices just underneath. It does depend on where you are in the library but the ceiling height was quite high with a skeletal building interior and not many decent enclosed spaces.
The pamphlet way finding system was only apparent to us once we had reached the top floor of the building and the pamphlet itself was quite bloated just in order to see where the topic and sub-genres I'm interested in is.
Ways we thought about improving way finding could be through:
- A more grid like template for things in the space via pillars
- Website/mobile map
- Carpet
- Mobile camera app to augment reality and direct the user to what they are looking for
But yea the general things to improve upon would be way finding a easy to read space and making the area a more comfortable enclosed environment for people to become lost in there work/interests/stories.
